"
COVID-19 Impact on
the labour market of Tourism Dependent Nations: The Southern
Europe case"
This project
intends to analyse the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the
labour market in 2020. As tourism-related activities were one
of the most affected ones, Portugal is compared with Spain,
Greece, and Italy since these nations are all similar
regarding the weight of tourism in the economy. The authors
decided to use both the unemployment rate and the labour
market slack as dependent variables, focusing their analysis
on the latter, since it also accounts for people who cannot
seek a job due to pandemic reasons. They used cross-sectional
data at NUTS 2 level to perform multiple linear regressions to
analyse what determinants are more likely to have affected the
labour slack. The results show that COVID-19 cases, the
relevance of tourism, and the percentage of young employment
(used as a proxy for temporary contracts), are the most
significant variables. An increase of 100 COVID-19 cases per
100 000 residents is estimated to have induced a 0.1pp boost
in the labour slack growth between 2019 and 2020. On the other
hand, an increase of 1pp in the percentage of employment in
tourism related activities, and young employment is expected
to have originated an increment by, respectively, 1pp and 4pp
on the main outcome variable. Contrarily, the results do not
show any significance of lockdowns in the change of the labour
market slack of the nations analysed.
